Sophisticated Ladies

Went to see Sophisticated Ladies last night at the Lincoln Theatre on its last night in DC. It was choreographed by and starring Maurice Hines. It was my first time going to the Lincoln Theatre. So many good things. We got an under 30 discount, $10 on $27 tickets $15 on $30 after fees. To get this discount you have to buy week of. You also can get discounts to a good number of local restaurants and bars with your ticket stub. We went to Tabaq for dinner after the show, which was pretty delish, but, of course, forgot to cash in our discount. The theatre was GORGEOUS, I wasn't expecting the inside to be so ornate. And soooo close to my apt. So much good, so many reasons to go!

The show itself was amazing. Set to the music of Duke Ellington it was an incredible array of music, singing, and dance. Maurice Hines is out of this world, so graceful, which is that much more awesome when you consider how old he is! He found two local brothers who tap, 15 and 17. Man, were they good. Just so good. All around good. I'm running out of synonyms for good. Good, great, fabulous. So glad I went, I definitely want to go to more shows!!

USA! USA!

This picture is incredible for so many reasons.

Congrats USA World Cup team.
1-0 in extra time, won the group, advance to elimination rounds.

Congrats John Isner.
11 hours and 5 minutes, 183 games, and more than 100 aces each.

USA! USA!

Tate < 3 Shama 4eva

Some of you may remember back when Shama and Tate were first introduced. They were insta best friends and more, and I was there to record the whole thing. Here's more from their intro.
.
On that day, Tate's clumsy attempts at love were thwarted, mostly because Shama's tail was in the way and they just couldn't seem to get the mechanics down. A year and a half later, all grown up, it seems they've figured it out. Baby bear red panda was born on June 16 and, as of today, weighs 6.5 ounces. Baby bear Baby bear XOXO.

Moose Sighting

I ran into Moose yesterday!!!! I was super creepy about it too, I told the guy who was walking him that I've been to his blog and he's a huge hit on fb. 210 fans he informed me. Best neighbor ever, moosey bear!

"If A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words, How Much Is A Reflection?"

Rudy asked me to go to an open mic last night because he knew the girl who was featuring. It was at BloomBars, right next to Wonderland on 11th St. Every Monday night they have what they call The Garden: Open Mic. It was a really neat experience in an out of your comfort zone, i can't believe people are this talented, life is really hard sometimes, kind of way. I asked Rudy to send me the video he took of the jam session at the end, but he didn't. So if you wish you could see a visual of the night, take it up with that guy. Next week the feature is a stand up comedian, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go back. Let me know if you think you might be interested.
.
There was a ridiculous amount of talent on display last night, the title of this post is a line from a poem that a guy wrote, he couldn't have been more than 18. It made me wonder what I'm doing with my life. More specifically, how long can I go on expressing myself through IASIP quotes? Hm. I'm going to feature here a poem that was read because I really liked it and beacuse it's by a well published poet and, therefore, Google searchable.
.
"Medusa"
Agha Shahid Ali
.
"I must be beautiful
Or why would men be speechless
at my sight? I have populated the countryside
with animals of stone
and put nations painlessly to sleep.
.
I too was human. I who now live here
at the end of the world
with two aging sisters, spinsters
massaging poisons into our scalps
and sunning our ruffled snakes,
.
and dreading the night, when
under warm stars
we recall men we have loved,
their gestures forever refusing us.
.
Then why let anything remain
when whatever we loved
turned instantly to stone?
I am waiting for the Mediterranean
to see me: It will petrify.
And as caravans from Africa begin to cross it,
I will freeze their cargo of slaves.
.
Soon, soon, the sky will have eyes:
I will fossilize its dome into cracked blue,
I who am about to come
into God's full view
from the wrong side of the mirror
into which He gazes."
.
And so she dreams
til the sun-crimsoned shield
blinds her into nightmare:
her locks, falling from their roots,
crawl into rocks to die.
Perseus holds the sword above her neck.
Restless in her sleep, she,
for the last time, brushes back
the hissing curls from her forehead.

Bear Cave Victory

Bears win, bears win! I didn't get to watch the game because I was working (CDC if you don't give us this money I will NEVER forgive you). Here's a video of the end of the game though. Love a gleeful hockey player. They are so cute. Patrick Kane skipping across the ice last week in after scoring the winning goal for the Stanley Cup was also adorable.
.
Bears won their 11th Calder Cup in franchise history. They are the first team to win it twice in a row since 1990 and 1991. They won it for the first time at home since 1980 and for the first time in the Giant Center. They won in front of a record crowd of 11,002 fans. They became the first AHL team to win the cup after dropping the first 2 games at home. They went on to win 4 in a row and also won Game 6 4-0.
.
Neuvy is so cute I can barely stand it and I don't see why we can't have Theo, Varly, AND Neuvy next year :( In other Caps news, Corvo, Walker, and BMo are def off the roster for next year, and most likely Theo as well. Theo's experience with the Caps makes me little queasy :-\ Nonetheless, I bought my Caps Convention tickets today, CANNOT WAIT!!!!

Ode to the Referee

The World Cup is upon us. I joined Nikita's YAHOO sports world hockey (i meant soccer but dont' know how to do a fancy strikethrough) group. I can't even get into how many issues I have with this. The least of which is the pool is called "Muppet League". (I love you Nikita)

Anyway, I read this article a bit ago and I still think about it on the regs, so I thought I would post it for you lovely people. It's a really interesting piece on what it takes to be a ref for this world scale tournament. Enjoy!

As Promised

I think i promised I would post about this little adventure eventually. Unfortunately, it took me such a long time to upload the pic that all I really feel like saying about it at this point is this was such an awesome fun day. I saw all my favorite players, Gabby, Vogs, Stretch, and George McPhee up close!! And Daph I love you so much for coming with me, THANK YOU.

Let's go Caps, can't wait for next season!!!! Fingers crossed that we get our season tickets.

Non-Traveling Blog Post

So Nikita is in England and my sister is in China. Both have neat traveling blogs and are doing super neat things. I blatantly stole this picture of Nikita lugging her suitcase to Brussels from her blog.

Because of all this AWESOMENESS I've been feeling like I have nothing to blog about because I'm not strolling around Hyde Park or experiencing tranquility at Kong Zi's gravesite. But now I've decided this is my blog, and this is what I'm doing, and if it's boring (it is) then just dont' read it :)

Things in June in WASHINGTON, DC so far:
  • The weather has been hot and muggy and completely disgusting. Excluding the last 2 days which have been in the upper 70s/low 80s and not humid at ALL. Beautiful.

  • I've been to Mr. Yogato at least twice.

  • The Flyers tied up the series 2-2, but fell last night. The NHL commercials that show the myriad of people lifting the Cup, or some of the player reactions after winning are giving me chills. I want to see some hockey players CRY soon. Hopefully Philly because, honestly, come on. In the words of the NHL, "What if Broad Street didnt' fight back?" or "What if Leighton didn't seize the moment?" I want to see him win the Conn Smythe.

  • The new health intern started, thus I suddenly find myself in the role of preceptor. I'm the new Nisha. (Psh, I WISH!!!)

  • I've fallen back in love with Mr. Darcy. Hopelessly, really.

  • Bought a vacuum cleaner. (Worth mentioning twice. If you give me shit, I will pack up the dust trapped by the fabulous vacuum and mail it to you.)

  • Bears are trailing 1-2 in the Calder Cup. I saw my first game last night, thanks to CSN. Saw some very familiar faces, Matty P and Carlson being my favorite. EmSchu joked that soon I'd be staking out high school games. Really though, if anyone ever has the time or willingness to explain the rules of calling someone up from the AHL and then sending them back down, I would really like that. Thanks.

  • Went clothes shopping for the first time in a REALLY long time and bought a few things, including a green dress I am OBSESSED WITH. And finally used my yankee candle gift certificate.

And with that last bullet, I realize I've run out of material. Byez

O yeah, this is what America's been up to.

Chang?...Chang?...Chang?

So I was MIA for my first jury duty. I'm still a Maryland resident, using my parent's address as my permanant residency. I filled out a questionnaire several months ago, so I knew a summons was on its way. My parents actually reminded me once or twice that something had come from MoCo in the mail and it was probably my jury duty summons. I, conveniently, forgot everytime I was at home to grab it.

Got a voicemail at work today. You had jury duty yesterday, but you didn't show up. Call us to reschedule. I was actually kind of worried about being in trouble. But she didn't sound too mad or mention anything about fines or maximum detention jail. So I called back.

"Hi, I got a call that I missed jury duty and I should call this number." "Who called you." "Uh...I'm not sure. Can I just give you my name?" "OK what is it." "Chang." "Long hold." "OK, Jane?" "Yes." "Yeah you were supposed to come in yesterday." "Yeah I know, I actually work and live in DC, but my permanant address is in MD, at my parents' house." "It's your parents' house? They don't forward your mail to you?" "Uh...no. I normally go home pretty often, but I haven't been in a while." "Yeah that's where we mailed the questionnaire, you filled that out." "Right...like I said I haven't been home in a bit...so...what can I do now." "We need to reschedule, maybe some time in July." "OK, is it possible to do it on a weekend?" "A weekend?? NO MAAM!! This is a government office. We're not open on the WEEKENDS." "O..ok I'm sorry, I've never done this before. A Monday would be ideal then...July 19?" "OK we'll send you another summons" "OK, can you tell me what will be on the envelope so I can tell my parents to open that piece of mail?" "It's the same envelope the questionnaire came in." "Well can you tell me what it will look like or what will be on it." "mumblemumble and our address." "I'm sorry?" "mumblemumble and our address." "OK...can you give me your address please?" "spoken in a DUH!! tone: 50 MD Ave, Rockville." "OK great...thanks...byez."

Nikita: you got some nazi version of leslie knope.

Real Woman Status?

I finally did it. I bought a vacuum. I don't even know if I'm spelling vacuum right. Huge step. HUGE. I feel like maybe I could be a real woman now. Or at least I took a step towards legit. I also bought a fancy oscillating fan for the living room and a wireless router. It was a really huge day for me. I was really really nervous about the vacuum cleaner. It's not everyday a girl gets her first domestic appliance, tying her to a lifetime of attempted perfection. As you can see, my feelings are still a little confused. It's been 3 days and I haven't turned it on yet. Mayank took it out of the box and we've been looking at it. I'm having people over tonight though so I will be using it within the hour. O boy.
